“cher thnku for helping me for my math and other sub, idk if you know but you helped me get back to reality during cb period and i nvr realised i was slacking so much🥰

“From Cher V I learnt that studying could be fun, exciting and satisfying. When I was about to give up on my O levels Math, I met Cher V. Never did I know learning to solve a single question could bring me so much joy and satisfaction. Honestly, if not for all that encouragement, advice and lessons she give, I wouldn’t have improved so much within that few months. In short, Cher V is much different from other classroom lessons u have in school. Somehow there is this overflowing energy that just want to keep you going and give your very best. When you yourself can’t see that best of you, under Cher V’s lessons, you will.” Nicole, 2019

We find that Cher V is a kind and highly capable teacher. She can connect well with my daughter during class and her lessons are interesting as she can relate them well. She also constantly encourages my daughter and we are thankful to know her.

‘Which person has had the most positive impact on your life? Describe this individual’s personality and in what ways he or she has influenced you.’

One of the student of Cher V wrote about her during 2019 English O level paper 1, and below is her text which Cher V is honored to received.

Cher V

Everyday in our life, we come across hundreds of different people. People of different personalities, quirks and identities. Among all these people that we meet, some end up becoming people we hold dear to our hearts, while some, just come and go. Sometimes, if we’re lucky enough, we would even come across people who would make a huge impact in our life. As for me, I can say that I was blessed to have had just that.

About two years ago, I was struggling with keeping up with my studies and was lagging behind in class with so many leadership and CCA commitments I had during my upper secondary years. However, all that changed when I met Cher V. She goes by the name of Cher V, a name that all her students would address her as. She was the first tuition teacher I’ve ever had in my whole life as a student, and I’m glad to say that I never regretted it one bit. Little did I know, that by joining her tuition classes I was getting myself into a long journey of self-discovery and that it was not merely just about attending her classes to improve my studies.

To me, it was the norm to see regular teachers in school just following through the syllabus they had to teach, teaching from the textbook and not exactly ensuring that every single one of their students were on the same page as them. They existed to simply just, fulfil their job scope of teaching. Which is not entirely wrong, but sometimes they never really had much heart in what they taught. You see, Cher V was the opposite of that. As much as teaching her students and making sure she would finish whatever it was she had to teach for that week was important, she also had a heart for her students. She went beyond the teaching textbook and genuinely got to know her students. She always thought of how exactly she could help them. Call her the ‘walking encyclopedia’, because she almost always had the answer to any question we had, whether it was academically related or simply a random question.

Why Cher V played a significantly important role in my life was because, when she got to know me, it dawned upon me that I was struggling with my identity as a person. I was always someone who would say yes to anything, or someone who hid behind a smile. Whenever someone asked me for help, as busy as I was, as entitled I was to saying no, I would offer up my help and end up having to deal with so much on my plate. Whenever someone asked if I was okay, I would hide my emotions and try to seem like everything was okay with a smile, even if it wasn’t . Cher V being Cher V however, saw right through all of that.

After countless ‘counselling’ sessions and being able to talk freely with her, under her guidance, I slowly started changing myself for the better. She taught me that there was nothing wrong with saying no, because if that meant I had to put myself first in the situation, then so be it because putting oneself first was the most important factor. She taught me that it was okay to be sad or angry or upset and that I did not need to hide those emotions; I was entitled to expressing my own emotions. There was no need to please anyone, because at the end of the day, you would never be able to please everyone. It took awhile to realise all that, but I was able to grow out of that old mindset and felt more confident and comfortable in my own skin.

It was truly amazing how someone could leave such an impact in my life because my story of how she influenced me to become a better version of myself is just a good one third of how she’s helped me grow as a person. I would say becoming Cher V’s student was a privilege because she has taught me to become more aware of the world and really helped me care more for the earth and environment whenever she talked about those issues in class. She had a heart for teaching, like I said, and because she does, although she’s a math and science teacher, it mattered to her that her students were educated on worldly matters as well.

All in all, I can safely say that there was never a dull moment with Cher V. Yes, there were gonna be moments where she would scold whenever it came down to work because that was the serious stuff. When it did come to fun and laughter however, you would really wish it would never end; it was just that much fun. She was not just an ordinary teacher, she was an educator, a counsellor and friend all in one and that will always be something I am blessed for.
